The ouija board told me "things just didn't work out." (What would we do without spirits from the Beyond?) It's sad that they're closing but I don't feel any big need to know more than that.

Have you NOT listened to ANYTHING people posted??? You should play with a ouija board because you can invoke evil spirits and become possessed! Good God man, think!!!

Also still in window right next to the new work permit is the notice of application for a liquor license by Michael Dorgan, dated Sept 2011. So, it looks like the space will still be a bar/restaurant. I hope they keep the fireplace.

Mike Dorgan (a friend of mine) is a partner in "The Wicked Monk..." so it's a definite; unless, he's opening a new place...

I'm possession-proof -- so low-key that I'd be bad p.r. for demons. If I were possessed I'd do wild things like wear lime-green Bermuda shorts or order something with hot sauce. Demons want something more dramatic.

Unfortunately I'm not surprised. From the beginning I said the former Chianti's space was too big to be a lunch spot. I'm sure Gold Coast did good business on the weekends, but they probably had mostly empty tables during weekdays. Yes they serve some dinner entrees, but most of their menu is sandwiches/lunch food, and Bay Ridge isn't a "business lunch" kind of neighborhood. I heard their weekend brunch was very good though, but I never got around to trying it.

from the Home Reporter's website:
Gold Coast Restaurant closed its doors for good the afternoon of Wednesday, May 23, just under a year after it opened. Owner Ted Mann said there were many factors in the decision to shut down. “It wasn’t received as well as was expected. It was not as busy as it should have been,” he told this paper. “Put that with endless Department of Health inspections…It wasn’t working out.”
Mann, who owns eight other eateries, said that the Mommy and Me Story time event held at Gold Coast will be relocated to Cebu Bistro on 88th Street, which he also owns. “Gold Coast was a labor of love. I am just going to refocus my energy in Cebu,” Mann said, adding that he is also opening a “massive” beer garden in Park Slope this June.

I guess I'm surprised Gold Coast closed so soon. My son and I ate there once (with a Groupon), and we thought the food, service, and ambience were all excellent. We would definitely have gone back.

Sahadi's rocks, like an exotic bazaar in Damascus, everything is ultra-fresh, and, as far as I can tell, mostly homemade, and reasonably priced. Herbs, spices, teas, bins of nuts, olives. I found tins of smoked paprika that cost a ransom in other stores here for "pennies". Their coffee selection is extensive, high quality, inexpensive, and can be bought in the bean or ground; full pound, not supermarket 14 or 12 oz. Also, across the street is Oriental Pastry carrying much of the same and at even lower prices. I can never walk out of either of these w/out at least a bagful of goodies.

ITA. And luckily for me, Sahadi's is very close to my Clandestine Y. Otherwise, I'd be wishing for a Sahadi's in BR.

I think Gold Coast could have made it if they had fashioned themselves after Katz's deli with a counter and stools, real deli counter, etc., So many people that I know were so excited and couldn't wait for the opening of this "NY style deli" and once it opened, it wasn't anything like they thought it was going to be and they didn't bother going at all or returning if they tried it out.

That huge Leros building on 88th and 5th has For Rent signs in the window. I thought radiology places were goldmines but it appears they are not. That' s a pretty big building. Hopefully, something decent will move in.

I was waiting for the light on that corner and I remembered reading that this place burned so I turned to take a look and the sign posted said that they were locating temporarily across the street.

um are you asking why it's strange timing? Well because the signage for "Zio Toto Cafe" has been up for a few weeks now, and they ironically open right after their original location across the street burns down in a fire. So yep some might say that the extremely convenient timing is a bit strange.

My wife had a gift card and we thought we'd be out for the money. But according to her the CT people are working in someone else's shop downstairs. At the time it sounded like they may have been separate but based on what you're saying maybe CT really did close entirely and the staff just moved en masse to another spot. In any case I'm glad she got to use the gift card.

Drat, you are talking about the place on 96thand 3rd, it was really nice having them so close. I am interested to see what happens once Wicked Monk moves into Bally Bunion. You're right the block is sort of quiet with things closing so much but right now we don't really have a bar like that on our end. I'm sort of worried about tons of drunk guys hanging around outside when I need to run out at night to Walgreens or whatever. This used to be an issue with Panic Room. Does anyone know what the current Wicked Monk situation is? Does it get rowdy outside of the bar?

The meat market on 96th & 3rd re-opened about a month or two ago after renovations, but I didn't realize until this article that it's run by the same people who own Embers...

I hear that the old Huckleberry's/Uncle Bucks is not going to be a burger place after all, but an affordable large portion Italian spot akin to Lidia Bastianich's "Becco" in Manhattan.

very quiet -- lacking the hustle and bustle of P&W, which is good when you need it. But don't think for one minute I'm leaving P&W -- it's just nice to have a quiet and comparable alternative closer to home and open Sundays.

I am lucky to be able to shuffle things and get to P & W on a Thursday around 1 so it is not so bad. The young lady gave me a neck massage for a really long time the other day. I guess that is a perk of my

Bad sign.

Looks like a new printing spot has opened up on the Mezzanine level at the 95th St stop of the R (at the 5th Ave and 95th St entrance).

There's a been a lot of turnover here recently (bodegas, internet cafe etc...), this place looks the most promising.
Then again, STAPLES is literally, one block away.
