Kitchop wrote:New work permit, dated 5/9/12, in window of old Bally Bunion space on Third between 95th & 96th. Permit is for internal demolition/renovation. Says no change in occupancy or purpose. Windows are papered over so we can't see what's being done but someone seems to be working in there. Also still in window right next to the new work permit is the notice of application for a liquor license by Michael Dorgan, dated Sept 2011. So, it looks like the space will still be a bar/restaurant. I hope they keep the fireplace.

Does it have to be close to home? If you are going to be downtown before your party, Sahadi's on Atlantic Ave is good for that kind of thing. Sahadi's has good baba, hummus and mini spinach pies and more. And it's very inexpensive. I've never shopped at The Family Store but I think I remember hearing good things. What about Tanoreen (though much more expensive than Sahadi's, no doubt)?

Sahadi's rocks, like an exotic bazaar in Damascus, everything is ultra-fresh, and, as far as I can tell, mostly homemade, and reasonably priced. Herbs, spices, teas, bins of nuts, olives. I found tins of smoked paprika that cost a ransom in other stores here for "pennies". Their coffee selection is extensive, high quality, inexpensive, and can be bought in the bean or ground; full pound, not supermarket 14 or 12 oz. Also, across the street is Oriental Pastry carrying much of the same and at even lower prices. I can never walk out of either of these w/out at least a bagful of goodies.
...I'd be wishing for a Sahadi's in BR

The Zio Toto Cafe was open last night, in the spot that Rustica was in. Strange timing.

doesn't look like it. haven't seen any sign of them and FB chatter now says they closed abruptly due to financial problems.

I never really liked them, but that block is getting depressing.

I went in for a Lotto ticket recently and the owner told me they haven't had a machine in a long time.
Bad sign.
When they take away your machine, it usually means you are financing your business with the Lotto's money.
