Secret papers reveal Senate 'talks' between Obama and Blagojevich

WASHINGTON -- Sections of court papers filed by scandal-scarred former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich that were mistakenly made public show a deeper involvement by President Obama in picking his Senate successor and call into question the president's public statements on the case.

According to passages in the papers filed Thursday by Blagojevich's lawyers -- which were blacked out under a judge's order but made visible by a computer glitch -- Obama, then president-elect, spoke directly to the disgraced governor on Dec. 1, 2008.

But just one week later -- on the day Blagojevich was indicted -- Obama told reporters flatly, "I had no contact with the governor or his office, and so we were not -- I was not aware of what was happening."

The allegation is just one of a host of thorny claims about Obama that were apparently inadvertently revealed when a blogger found it was possible to read the redacted lines by simply copying and pasting them into a regular text file.

Blagojevich is set to go on trial in June on charges that he tried to sell the Senate seat vacated by Obama. The judge had ordered large sections of the defense team's filing to be blacked out.

The newly revealed sections also contradict Obama's claims that he never discussed favorable legislative action in exchange for a large campaign contribution with his former neighbor, fund-raiser and key supporter Tony Rezko, who has since been convicted of fraud.

Blagojevich's lawyers charge that Rezko has told the feds that, indeed, he did have such conversations with a "public official." The defense believes the official to be Obama.

Also contained in the unredacted papers is a claim that, contrary to his denials, Obama did push longtime friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett for his old Senate seat using a union official as a go-between with Blagojevich.

The filing indicates that the union official has testified to federal investigators about a phone call he had with Obama on the day before he won the presidency in which he indicated that Jarrett "would be a good senator for the people of Illinois and would be a candidate who could win re-election."

The White House has refused to comment on the case.

Do you 'tards ever read what you post?

Let's break down what the Post article actually says. An unidentified blogger claimed that he had hacked redacted copies of court filings made by Blagojevich's lawyers which allegedly say that their client spoke with Obama just before the incident for which he's charged occurred. The blogger doesn't say how he got his hands on these protected court filings nor does he show the alleged document nor does he cite the alleged statements made by the attorneys, nor is it explained why a judge would go to the trouble of redacting text from a document that's not supposed to be released in the first place.

But even if it were all true, it's an uncorroborated, second-party statement made by Blagojevich's attorneys on behalf of a corrupt, self-serving liar facing years of prison time who has every reason to impeach Obama's credibility in order to create reasonable doubt in his own trial. In fact, Blagojevich's attorneys are assembling their witness list this week and nothing would serve them better than to have a judge order Obama to testify since it was his vacated seat that's at the core of this trial.

I'll do better than the NY Post. I'll identity the mystery blogger. He's Sammy Benoit, an anti-Obama/pro-Israel asshole. Not a journalist, not a reporter -- a blogger who used to be with the World Nut Daily clone, Pajamas Media, who now writes right wing opinion pieces for his Blogspot blog, Yid With Lid. That's the source of this "news".

Obama has been lying since day 1. He promised a "public option" for heatlhcare. He promised not to allow the insurance companies to keep profiting off of illness (but then invited these same companies to form the HC bill). He promised to end "Don't ask don't tell" and pass the Employee Free Choice Act (and has done nothing to get it passed in congress).

Obama the candidate promised a lot. Obama the president has proven to be the "centrist" Clinton was. He just sounds better when he lies.

can someone tell me why all these commercials using obamas speeches, concerning debt elimination,prescription drug care and medical care.all commercials for various organizations is he profiting from this one way or another.i dont remember any other president that ive heard so much.and they all seem like seedy organizations, can you say acorn.

Because they can. What they're using are excerpts from Obama's presidential speeches, which are public domain. Bush was subjected to the same indignities. Remember the 9/11 commemorative plates with Bush at Ground Zero?

buying a commerative plate is alot different than contacting a debt consolidation company on the pre text that president obama says so,or to sign p for a prescription plan or medical plan that costs like 1.99 a day based on pre obamas saying to do it.the whole thing stinks of a scam. i guess caveat emptor.

What "perk" was Obama supposedly trading for again? Blagojevich appointed his crony, Roland Burris, to the position, not Valerie Jarrett. For his part, Blagojevich was despised by both parties and had the lowest approval rating of any politician recorded by the Chicago Times in over 30 years of polling: only 4% of respondents rated him as even "good". Why would Obama want to give up his close friend and adviser from his transition team to bring aboard a train wreck like Blagojevich who stood zero chance of being confirmed for any cabinet position?

It's just Blagojevich continuing to throw shit against the wall to coerce a better plea bargain deal from the US Attorney. As I said, I think it's amazing how well Rod Blagojevich has rehabilitated his credibility with the right wing.
